Fingertip Pulse Oximeters
Blood oxygen concentration
What a Pulse Oximetry Test Measures
- Oxygen Saturation (SpO2): This is the main measurement from a pulse oximetry. It indicates what percentage of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in blood cells, is currently carrying oxygen. This measurement gives a good indication of how effectively oxygen is being sent to parts of the body furthest from the heart, such as the arms and legs.
- Pulse Rate: Besides oxygen saturation, pulse oximeters also display the heart rate, which is the number of times the heart beats per minute.
Normal Oximetry Levels
- Oxygen Saturation: A normal SpO2 reading typically ranges from 95% to 100%. Values above 90% are usually considered healthy.
- Pulse Rate: Normal pulse rates can vary significantly but generally range from 60 to 100 beats per minute for adults. Athletes or more fit individuals might have a lower resting heart rate.
